The homes in this pocket of the service area were mostly built in the 1980s and 90s, with a median year around 1988, and that generation of garage door came with specific hardware: torsion or extension springs sized for lighter steel doors, and cables rated for that load, not for the heavier insulated doors a lot of owners have swapped in since. When a heavier replacement door goes on the original cable and drum setup, the cable is working harder than it was built for, and that's a common way we see cables fray years before they should.
Cold, moderate winters add wear on top of that. Cable that's already carrying more load than it was sized for gets stiffer and more brittle in cold weather, and stiff cable frays faster at the drum where it bends under tension.
